Waymo, Google’s autonomous ride hailing service has officially announced Miami as their next city. Beginning 2025 Waymo’s all electric Jaguar I-PACE’s will roam the Miami streets with the first revenue passenger ride slated for 2026. Now as crazy as the “robo taxi” idea may sound, Waymo has seen much success in Phoenix, L.A. and San Francisco with a combined weekly ridership of approximately 150,000 trips. If you are wondering what a trip in Waymo is like, below is a video of our ride.
Continuing Growth
It comes to no surprise that Waymo has selected Miami as their next city. The heavily modified vehicles historically have operated in warmer climates where snowy roads are not a concern. In order to support continued growth Waymo has partnered with Moove who will oversee fleet operations, facilities and charging infrastructure. โWe are excited to partner with Moove in Phoenix and later Miami, bringing together their mobility-focused fleet management experience with our growing Waymo One service,โ said Ryan McNamara, Vice President of Operations at Waymo. โTogether, we will provide safe, seamless trips for riders, and scale faster and more cost-effectively over time, with safety continuing to lead the way.” In addition to the electric Jaguar I-PACEs Waymo procure a fully electric van designed by Geely Holding Groupโs premium electric brand, Zeekr. The specialized platform will allow Waymo to grow in their current markets while expanding into new ones. Speaking of new markets Francis X. Suarez, Mayor of Miami had this to say about Waymo’s entrance into Miami; โFully autonomous driving technology offers a safe and convenient option to the people of Miami. Iโm so pleased to welcome Waymo to our city. Waymoโs commitment to sustainability with their all-electric fleet is the perfect mobility option to our city as we continue to prioritize low cost, clean energy.โ Service is expected to commence in 2026.
