United Airlines has began outfitting their two class regional jets with Starlink Wi-Fi. The entire duel class regional jet fleet is expected to receive the new Wi-Fi. By the end of 2025, United expects to upfit over 40 regional jets. Eventually, the entire United regional and mainline fleet will get retrofitted with Starlink. The best part of it all, the Starlink Wi-Fi will be free for MileagePlus passengers.
High Speed Browsing And Instillations
United Airlines is able to rapidly install Starlink to the regional fleet due to the Wi-Fi receivers small footprint. United claims that the aircraft will only need to be placed out of service for 4 days compared to the 10 days needed for other providers. The entire system will only weigh 80 lbs. which is a fraction of the weight of other comparable systems. It’s not just the speed of installation that is fast. United has confirmed that the Starlink-equipped regional aircraft will have Wi-Fi speeds up to 250 megabits per second (Mbps), which is 50 times faster than current regional aircraft speeds. “Our ability to roll-out this innovative service with unprecedented speed and scale is a direct result of the advanced equipment, technology and team of experts at United,” said United’s VP of Digital Technology, Grant Milstead. “Starlink has been a terrific partner – our combined spirit of innovation and collaboration will enable us to hit our goal of more than 300 regional aircraft installations before the end of this year.” It will be exciting to see the rest of the United fleet get retrofitted from the current lackluster Wi-Fi experience.
