Qantas Group has announced a firm order for firm order for 24 wide body aircraft consisting of 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 12 Airbus A350s. The orders will allow Qantas to wind down Airbus A330 operations. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027. As a part of the fleet renewal program, Qantas can order additional aircraft as deemed fit from both Airbus and Boeing. In addition to replacing existing Airbus A330s Qantas will ultimately retire 10 Airbus A380s replacing them with more fuel efficient A350s.
A Sustainable Long Haul Fleet
As part of the aircraft orders Qantas will secure over 500 million liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) expected to enter into long haul fleet by 2028. Qantas estimates a carbon emissions reduction of 80%. The existing A350s on order will provide better fuel efficiency compared to existing aircraft. As a result, the new aircraft will be able to complete nonstop routes from New York and London to Australia. Named Project Sunrise the aircraft will feature spacious suites and a dedicated relaxation area. In addition to the announced long haul fleet replacement orders, Qantas is adding 29 Airbus A220 narrowbody aircraft to the fleet. As with the long haul aircraft orders, the new A220 aircraft will feature increased cabin comfort and better fuel efficiency.
