On February 16th, an electrical issue in New York JFK Terminal 1 resulted in an isolated fire. The fire was quickly extinguished without incident however, the terminal is shut down as the Port Authority attempts to restore power. Terminal 1 serves a majority of inbound and outbound international flights. Many inbound international aircraft have had to either divert to nearby airports or return back to their origin destination. Boston Logan International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport accepted diverting aircraft. The JFK Airport official Twitter page released the following statement.

Affected Flights
The Airport has moved some flights to other terminals in order to accommodate the disruption. Some flights arriving into JFK fared some significant disruptions. An Air New Zealand Flight Inbound to New York had to return to Auckland after flying for over 8 hours. An ITA Airways flight had to return to Rome as well due to the the issues at Terminal 1. Many flights were ultimately canceled including Swiss, TAP Air Portugal, Azores Airlines and Volaris. Any passengers departing out of JFK Terminal 1 should consult with their airline as flights may be moved to another terminal or be faced with possible cancelations. Hopefully in the coming days the outage will be resolved and normal operations can resume.
