The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced an order for six additional Siemens duel mode locomotives for the Connecticut Department Of Transportation (CDOT). The order is in addition to the current order for 27 duel mode locomotives placed by the MTA back in 2020. Deliveries are expected to begin around the 2027 time frame. The locomotives will be replacing the current duel mode locomotives which are reaching the end of their lifespan after 25+ years of service.
Modernizing Passenger Rail Sustainably
Connecticut Department Of Transportation recently placed an order for new rail cars from Alstom replacing ageing coaches on the Hartford and Waterbury rail lines. As with the railcar replacements, the MTA and CDOT will have more efficient locomotives compared to their predecessor the GE P32AC-DM. The new Siemens locomotives will operate with a duel mode power system capable of operating on electric or diesel power. This means that the locomotives will be able to operate into Grand Central Terminal which requires diesel locomotives to operate on third rail electric power. Locomotives will be EPA Tier IV compliant meeting strict EPA emissions standards.
