The MBTA Boston Massachusetts’s transit agency has announced the final exterior paint design for the upcoming Type 10 “supercars” that will operate on the green lines in the next few years. Input on the new design relied heavily on the traveling public and MBTA employees. According to the MBTA, over 16,300 responses were received with the winning design receiving 9,566 votes.
Modernizing The Green Line Fleet
Across the network the MBTA is modernizing their fleet. This past year, the agency has taken delivery of new subway cars for the Orange and Red lines from Chinese manufacturer CRRC with an estimated valuation of $1 billion. In a separate order placed in 2021, the MBTA selected Spanish rail manufacturer CAF to produce 100 Green Line Type 10 supercar light rail vehicles as part of a $811 million contract. The new light rail vehicles will replace aging equipment offering passengers improved wheelchair accessibility, improved safety features and increased capacity. As the trains enter initial production, full sized mockups of Green Line Type 10 supercars will be placed at various stations and public areas for the general public to visit and offer feedback on the initial design.
