In a rather unusual move, Ultra Low Cost (ULCC) operator Frontier Airlines is making radical changes to their fare and fee structure. Instead of adding more fees the airline is doing the exact opposite. In a Tweet on May 28, 2024 Frontier Airlines announced that they will offer free seat selections, carry-ons and no change fees. As the U.S. airline market is seeing financial struggles and blocked mergers, Frontier looks to differentiate their offerings from the competition.
Elimination Of Extra Fees
For the consumer, the aforementioned changes will be a welcome perk when flying Frontier Airlines. To simplify things, Frontier is dividing fare classes into four distinct bundles; Basic, Economy, Premium and Business. With either Economy, Premium or Business you will be able to modify or change your reservation without change fees. “We’ve changed, and now it’s free to change. This enhancement is a key part of our promise to make travel with Frontier as flexible and worry-free as possible. We understand that plans can change, and we want to ensure that when they do, our passengers can adjust their bookings without the stress of additional fees,” said Barry Biffle, Chief Executive Officer, Frontier Airlines. In another surprising and welcome move, Frontier will launch “For Less” guarantee. If a passenger finds a lower price on a comparable flight operating the same route on the same day Frontier will award the passenger 2,500 Frontier Miles after comparting their trip on Frontier. These changes will make traveling on frontier that much more enjoyable. Below is a chart provided by Frontier outlining the new bundle classes:
- Business: Designed for travel luxury, this option offers UpFront Plus with additional space and comfort (subject to availability), including a guaranteed empty middle seat at the front of the aircraft. This premium option also includes a carry-on bag, two checked bags with an increased 50-pound weight allowance, and first-to-board priority boarding (Board First) with guaranteed overhead bin space.
- Premium: Built for comfort, this option offers a premium seat assignment (subject to availability), along with a carry-on bag and first-to-board priority boarding (Board First) with guaranteed overhead bin space.
- Economy: Provides all the essentials for a streamlined travel experience with a carry-on bag and a standard seat assignment, offering a balance between affordability and convenience.
- Basic: Perfect for budget travelers, this option includes a personal item, with additional amenities available for purchase, providing flexibility and savings.
