The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has announced Doppelmayr as the manufacturer that will replace the aging monorails currently operating the 2.5 mile terminal loop. The PANYNJ will provide Doppelmayr a $570 million contract for design and construction, with an estimated $385 million over 20 years. The trains will connect the terminals, parking and rail station. Delivery is expected to commence 2029.

A Unique AirTrain Design

The design of the new AirTrain will be a froward thinking design not commonly seen with airport people movers. The train will be powered by a cable in the lower tracks. Cable propelled trains have been successfully implemented on Aria Express in Las Vegas and the Oakland Airport Connector. Doppelmayr has also implemented cable propelled trains in the interior terminal connector at Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH). Similar to the other trains, the new Newark AirTrain will feature larger more accessible train cars. The new trains are estimated to begin service around 2029.
