George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston Texas serves as a strategic hub for United Airlines. Terminal B however is starting to see some better days. Exciting renovations to terminal B will commence thanks to over $2 billion in investments from United Airlines and the Houston Airport System (HAS). Over 40 new gates are expected to meet the increased demand out of United’s mega hub.
Expansions Throughout The Terminal
The 1960s era terminal piers will be demolished making way for 22 new narrowbody gates. The Terminal B North expansion will comprise of two passenger concourses housing a three floor 765,000 square foot terminal with 22 narrowbody gates. An expansive United Club on the mezzanine level will become the largest United Club in the United Airlines network. Terminal B South will better accommodate larger two class regional jets such as the E175. Unlike the current terminal where passengers board via air stairs exposing them to the elements, all flights in the new Terminal B South will board via jet bridges.
Dedicated Spaces For Passengers
Passengers traveling through the refreshed Terminal B complex at Houston IAH will have special amenities to reduce the stresses of air travel. Similar to Boston Logan International Airports Sensory Room, the new Terminal B will have a sensory room, United Airlines branded “park,” and a comfort area providing a quiet space between clearing TSA and reaching the boarding area. Post security there will be over 115,00 square feet of food and retail space.
Sustainable Operations
A big focus is placed on ensuring the construction and operation of Terminal B is managed in a sustainable manor. The construction aims to achieve LEED silver certification for the revamped terminal. LEED certification is recognized for sustainability and environmental responsibility in design and construction of the terminal structure. Undoubtedly, not only will Terminal B be vastly improved, it will be better for the environment as well.
