Aircraft manufacturer Boom Supersonic has reached a significant milestone in the construction of the superfactory that will assemble the upcoming Overture supersonic airliner. On September 20, 2023 construction workers officially “topped out” the structure placing the final support beam into place. The factory, located at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina is set for completion in 2024. Once complete the LEED certified eco friendly factory will construct an upwards of 66 aircraft a year.
A Supersonic Future
Following the exciting milestone at the factory, Boom will work on completing the full scale iron bird facility in Colorado. This facility will be used to test various systems using a full scale model of the aircraft. The design journey has not been a smooth road for Boom Supersonic however. During the beginning design phase there was difficulty finding an engine supplier for the supersonic aircraft. At the 2023 Paris Air Show Boom Supersonic announced a new engine design along with a full list of repeatable suppliers joining the program. As the order book stands there are 130 orders split between American Airlines, Japan Airlines and United Airlines. The first aircraft roll out is projected for 2026 with the first flight projected for 2027.
