Boeing has shared updates on the upcoming X-66 Sustainable Flight Demonstrator. Back on August 17, 2023 Boeing received a used MD-90 aircraft that will begin its conversion to the X-66. On January 8, 2024 the aircraft begun the extensive part out process including the removal of the engines and wings. The aircraft will undergo 3D scans to begin the design and build out plans.
A Testbed For Future Aircraft
Boeing’s X-66 will be constructed and flown in collaboration with NASA. While the airframe is based off a Boeing MD-90, the new aircraft will have new efficient wings paired with extra-long, stabilized by diagonal struts. The design called the “Transonic Truss-Braced Wing configuration” aims at being more fuel efficient than current single isle commercial aircraft. โThe X-66A will help shape the future of aviation, a new era where aircraft are greener, cleaner, and quieter, and create new possibilities for the flying public and American industry alike” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. Funding for the project will be through NASA’s Funded Space Act Agreement with Boeing. Ground and flight testing is estimated to commence 2028.
