While Boeing is most known for their commercial airliners such as the 737 and 747 family of aircraft, Boeing has a large defense arm with aircraft ranging from fighter jets to air refueling tankers. Boeing has begun development and test technologies for a hypersonic interceptor prototype for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The project will be a part of a four year effort to test aerodynamic testing for the Hypersonic Interceptor.
A Speedy Future
Supersonic and hypersonic technology in aircraft is evolving at a rapid pace. Following the retirement of the Concorde, supersonic passenger travel has come to an end. Boom Supersonic however, looks to revive supersonic passenger flights. The manufacturer has also researched defense capabilities for the aircraft. Meanwhile Boeing is collaborating with DARPA on the Glide Breaker. The platform will be a hypersonic interceptor that can destroy a threat traveling at over five times the speed of sound in the earths upper atmosphere. Over the next four years Boeing will test and provide foundational information for the interceptors., which will assist DARPA in further development of the platform. *Web article and images do not imply or constitute DoD and or DARPA endorsement.
