Amtrak is making a handful of improvements to the overall experience on their long distance trains. Being the backbone of Amtrak’s operation the improved experience will be welcome by all. Enhancements will include new locomotives, new rolling stock as well as refreshing current rolling stock. Stored equipment will also see a refresh before returning to service. Onboard food and amenities will also see a complete refresh in the coming months.
Fleet Upgrades
Amtrak is doing a top to bottom fleet $28 million refresh. Over 400 “double decker” Superliners will receive new bedding and ADA compliant restrooms. Currently over 100 Superliners have been refreshed. Viewliner I sleeping cars commonly found on routes out of the northeast and Chicago will receive new seat cushions, carpeting and lighting beginning 2024. While the current Superliners are seeing a refresh, Amtrak is working on a Long Distance Fleet Procurement for new long distance train cars with a formal request occurring end of 2023.
Upgraded Dining
Similar to other trains like the Acela Express, Amtrak is reimagining the onboard menu on their long haul trains. On routes on the west coast, the revamped menu has been rolled out. Now on the east coast, the Silver Meter and Silver Star will now receive the new food options. In the Cafe Car, passengers can now enjoy new hot meals, snacks, salads, vegan options along with new non alcoholic beverages.
Improved Mobile App
The Amtrak Mobile APP will implement an improved delay notification service relaying critical updates to passengers via push notifications and text in the event of a delay. The BidUP program will allow passengers on long haul trains the ability to make a no risk bid on upgrades including upgrades to private rooms on certain train routes and equipment. These improvements will greatly enhance the experience on Amtrak long haul trains.
