Amtrak is increasing their order for 10 additional new and state of the art Airo trainsets. The contract option for the 10 additional trains will help Amtrak meet the rising demand for passenger rail travel across the United States. This will bring Amtrak to a total contract order of 83 Airo trainsets. The first trainset is expected to enter service in 2026 initially operating on the Cascades corridor in Washington State.
Modernizing An Aging Fleet
Amtrak announced the Airo trainsets back in December 2022. The trains will replace the aging Amfleet passenger cars which have been operating since the late 1970s. Airo trainsets will replace the Amfleets on the Adirondack, Carolinian, Downeaster, Empire Service, Hartford / Springfield line, Northeast Corridor, Maple Leaf, Palmetto, Pennsylvanian, Keystone and Vermonter Amtrak routes. The trains will be built in Siemens plant in California. Passengers will enjoy amenities such as Wi-Fi, leather seating, power outlets and increased wheelchair accessibility. As the current contract with Siemens Mobility stands, additional trainsets can be purchased if demand deems necessary.
