Amtrak is collaborating with the Amtrak Police Department, Operation Lifesaver and local emergency services across the country for “operation clear track.” From September 18-24 is rail safety week. During this week and operation clear track local, state, federal and transit police agencies will be stationed at railroad crossings throughout the country. They will be distributing safety materials to motorists and pedestrians reminding them of the dangers of crossing railroad tracks especially when the gates are down.
Reducing Fatalities And Injuries
According to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) there are more than 400 fatalities a year related to trespassing along railroad rights of way. The agency cites that nine out of ten railroad related fatalities are as a result of crossing collisions or trespassing on the right of ways. Some Amtrak trains and routes reach speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. In addition to providing a visible law enforcement presence at stations, Amtrak Police Officers will provide informational fliers at stations such as Mobile Alabama, Oakland California, Chicago and more. By doing so, those near railroad tracks will gain insightful information that can potentially save a life. A full map of participating operation clear track locations can be found here.
