Amtrak has formally sent out a Request For Proposal (commonly referred to as RFP) to seek options for transitioning the rail fleet to zero-emissions technology. Qualified qualified parties are encouraged by Amtrak to respond to the RFI in order to help meet Amtrak’s goals of achieving net zero emissions by 2045. โFinding the cleanest technologies to carry customers across our vast network will be transformative as we deliver a new era of rail,โ said Amtrak President Roger Harris. โWe are excited to take this important step toward providing safe and reliable service with a smaller impact on the environment.โ
Reducing Emissions On The Rails
Amtrak has already implemented steps towards towards achieving net zero emissions. Similar to airlines selecting more fuel efficient aircraft, Amtrak is replacing their fuel thirsty diesel locomotives with Siemens Charger locomotives which are already in service on a handful of routes like the Pacific Surfliner and Capital Corridor. The Siemens Charger locomotivesย are EPA Tier 4 compliant meaning they emit very low emissions compared to outgoing locomotives. With the highly anticipated Avelia Liberty Trainsets entering service soon, they will consume 40% less energy per passenger than the existingย Acelaย fleet according to Amtrak. The RFI will aid Amtrak in continuing to peruse Zero Emissions Technology. Currently, a battery hybrid operated trainset is already in the works to replace Amtrak’s aging passenger coaches operating on the Northeast Corridor. Hopefully the RFP will help bring Amtrak’s rail fleet into the 21st century, albeit a bit greener.
