Passengers on the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak’s busiest section of rail is receiving increased frequencies on the Northeast Regional. The Northeast regional connects Boston to Washington DC with intermediate stops in-between. The expanded service includes additional weekday roundtrips and two new weekend roundtrips between New York Penn Station (NYP) and Washington Union Station (WAS). In addition to this there will be a new weekend morning departure from Philadelphia 30th Street Station (PHL) to New York. The increased service frequencies have gone into effect as of the writing of this article.
Meeting Ambitious Ridership Goals
Amtrak has set out on meeting ambitious ridership goals for 2024 and beyond. The service modifications to the Northeast Regional service will mean a 20% increase in weekday service and 10% increase on Sundays. According to Amtrak, this totals a capacity increase of 1 million seats on the Northeast Regional. “More people are taking the train than ever before and we’re proud to offer our customers additional travel options when they ride with us on the Northeast Regional,” said Amtrak Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Eliot Hamlisch.
