American Airlines is finally joining the rest of the pack with free Wi-Fi coming online (pun intended) starting January 6, 2026 for AAdvantage members. The phased rollout will initially begin on select narrowbody and regional aircraft with 100% of their narrowbody and dual-class regional aircraft. So long expensive Wi-Fi fees!

A Bold Roll Out Plan

American aims to have the free Wi-Fi across more than two million flights a year. Barring no issues with retrofits, the majority of the fleet will receive the upgrades in the coming months. The service is sponsored by AT&T and is available for all AAdvantage loyalty program members. If you are not a member luckily, joining is free and only takes a matter of minutes. If you are flying on a long-haul aircraft, you may get the complimentary Wi-Fi depending on the aircraft type. Factory fresh Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and select 787-8s will receive the free Wi-Fi. Their Boeing 777 aircraft will still have paid Wi-Fi for the time being. “Free high-speed Wi-Fi isn’t just a perk — it’s essential for today’s travelers. That’s why we’re proud to begin rolling out this new offering, sponsored by AT&T, across the majority of our fleet,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer. Personally, I have to agree with the beginning of that statement, “it isn’t just a perk its essential.” It is about time American Airlines joined the many other airlines who have been dabbling with free Wi-Fi for quite some time now.
