Alaska Airlines is doubling down on their West coast presence. The airline is expanding out of Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) with three new routes following Avelo Airlines termination of their Burbank operation. Additionally, Alaska will add nonstop service from Boise to Ontario, Palm Springs to Santa Rosa, San Diego to Sun Valley and Spokane to Orange County. Flights are expected to begin this October.
Staying Strong In West Coast Markets
Over the past couple of years Alaska Airlines has grown steadily in the West coast market. Some of the growth is thanks to the acquisition of Virgin America which opened up new routes throughout California and North America. It’s interesting to see Alaska expanding further out of Burbank following Avelo Airline’s abrupt departure. Alaska Airlines will be operating flights to engine using the smaller Embraer E175 on a daily frequency. Given the smaller size of the aircraft compared to Avelo Airlines 737s, the route may end up working for Alaska. Kirsten Amrine Vice President of Revenue Management and Network Planning at Alaska Airlines had this to say about the new routes; “We’re the only global airline based on the West Coast, and we’re proud to offer the most flights and seats between California, Washington and Oregon. These new additions further expand our ability to take our guests between growing markets in California and the Pacific Northwest for leisure and business travel.
