Avelo Airlines Starts Delaware Flights

Houston based low cost airline Avelo has commenced flights from Wilmington, Delaware (ILG) as of February 1st. The airline will base crews and a single Boeing 737-700 initially on the airfield. In addition to Wilmington the airline has bases in New Haven, Orlando, Raleigh Durham, Fort Myers, and Palm Springs. Prior to Avelo entering Wilmington, the state of Delaware was the only state in the United States without any air service. Frontier Airlines has previously flown into Wilmington but left in June of 2022.

Destinations

The inaugural Avelo flight departed to Orlando International Airport (MCO). Five additional Florida destinations will soon commence with $49 introductory fares. The following destinations have been added:

  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) Thursday and Sunday
  • Fort Myers (RSW) Monday and Friday
  • Orlando (MCO) Monday, Friday and Saturday
  • Tampa (TPA) Thursday and Sunday
  • West Palm Beach (PBI) Wednesday and Saturday

Business Model

Wilmington fits in to Avelo’s business model of flying into smaller secondary markets. Wilmington is under 40 miles from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). Cities such as New Haven Connecticut and Burbank California have become hubs for the airline, home airports where passengers avoid driving to larger more crowded airports. According to the airline Avelo flies to over 34 destinations carrying over 14,000 flights since 2020. Tickets can be purchased on their website.
