American Airlines and Canadian operator Porter Airlines have applied with the U.S. Department Of Transportation (DOT) for a blanket codeshare. Pending regulatory approval the two airlines would place their respective flight numbers on each others flights. American Airlines flights would also have a Porter (PD) designation code before the flight number. Porter flights would have an American Airlines (AA) designation code. According to the DOT filing, “the flights will be between the United States and Canada, via intermediate points, between gateways in each country and points within, and points beyond, thus extending the range of American’s and PACL’s services to the mutual benefit of the traveling and shipping public and the Joint Applicants.” In layman’s term, the codeshare agreement will open up new opportunities on both sides of the border for passenger’s.
Strengthening Ties With Oneworld Carriers
Porter Airlines has grown to be a strong contender in the Canadian market. In addition to their Q-400 regional turboprop aircraft they recently acquired Embraer E195-E2 jets equipped with premium seating and enough range to fly routes like Montreal to Las Vegas. Then in 2023 Porter Airlines introduced a partnership with Oneworld operator Alaska Airlines. The partnership ramped up significantly in 2025. Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members can earn and redeem miles on Porter Airlines flights. Porter Airlines routes also show up on Alaska Airlines website. In the not so distant future, American airlines could strengthen ties with Porter Airlines and offer similar reciprocal benefits. Given that Delta Air Lines has WestJet, and United has Air Canada for their Canadian partners it seems like a no brainer that Porter and American are strengthening ties.
