If you live in the Dallas metro area you most likely have flown out of Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) or Dallas Love Field. The Dallas suburb of McKinney will soon be the third commercial airport in the Dallas metroplex. On July 18th, 2025 the airport reached a significant milestone with the airline terminal officially breaking ground. The terminal is currently estimated to be completed in late 2026.
A Mystery Airline Tenant Revealed
No specific airline was announced however there was speculation that Ultra Low Cost Carrier Avelo Airlines would operate a base out of the airport. Through a public records request by local news station WFAA, it was identified that Avelo Airlines is the operator that is in talks with the airport. A secondary market like McKinney would be a perfect fit for the airline. Avelo has had much success out of secondary airports like Tweed New Haven and Wilmington Delaware. The airline could mirror the success of the aforementioned airports operating leisure routes out of McKinney to Florida and maybe even Las Vegas. Initially, Avelo will base three Boeing 737 aircraft on the field. Given that they do not have a large fleet, the aircraft will most likley come from one of their West coast bases that are slated to be shut down later this year. As construction at the airport progresses it will be interesting to see what routes Avelo Airlines announces and if other airlines want an opportunity out of McKinney.
