Amtrak will begin a request for proposal commonly known as an RFP for replacements of their long distance fleet. The multi-billion-dollar procurement will be made possible through funding from President Biden’s infrastructure act and congressional funding. The replacements will mainly focus on replacing aging Superliner railcars which are nearing the end of their service life.
Improving Long Distance Service
Amtrak is making strides in improving long distance service. The RFP outlines elements of improvement including, redesigned coach seating, private rooms, food service, and enhanced accessibility. No vender has been selected as of yet. A final design, development and production are expected to commence over the next couple of years. Deliveries are currently projected to begin in the early 2030s. While the procurement process is underway, Amtrak is making improvements to the current aging Superliners including new seating cushions and upholstery. Currently half of the 400 Superliner rail cars have already undergone a much needed refresh. These investments will greatly enhance long distance rail travel in the years to come.
