On October 12, 2023 Amtrak Unveiled the first of 83 new Airo passenger cars expected to hit the rails across the country starting in 2026. Amtrak placed the order for the new trains back in 2021, replacing the aging Amfleet cars which are at the end of their service life. The Airo trains will be manufactured by Siemens Mobility in California, adhering to buy America standards.
American Made Trains With American Suppliers
The new trains will be a large undertaking for Amtrak and Siemens Mobility. According to Amtrak the Airo trains will be constructed with over 3,500 parts from over 100 suppliers from 31 states. Amtrak president Roger Harris had this to say on the upcoming train cars, โThe new trains will not only provide world-class accommodations on routes throughout the country but will stimulate local economies as we revolutionize the Amtrak experience.โ The new Airo trains will feature redesigned interiors, larger windows, plenty of legroom, double and single seats, dedicated outlets, USB ports and onboard Wi-Fi, a step up from the outgoing aging Amfleet railcars.
