Southwest Airlines has canceled over 2,800 flights on Monday 12/27/2022. While the underlying cause of the issue is still being investigated many passengers are left wondering what their next course of action is. Many affected passengers may be wondering if they are entitled to a refund. The U.S. Department of Transportation has created a dashboard where passengers are able to access information about what they are entitled to when it comes to cancelations and delays. In the dashboard a passenger can file a consumer complaint to the D.O.T. online or by phone.

Delays

According to the DOT , airlines are not required to refund a ticket, however it does not hurt to see what the airline can do. In many instances they may offer something out of good gesture such as a meal voucher or bonus frequent flyer miles.

Cancelations

According to the DOT if your flight is canceled, an airline will rebook you free of charge to the next available flight. If your flight is canceled and you decide to cancel your rip you are entitled to a refund of both the flight and bag costs. This includes nonrefundable tickets as well.

According to the DOT. a passenger is entitled to a refund for the following reasons:

  • Declared Lossed Luggage = Full Refund
  • If an airline unreasonably refuses to consider a bag lost for an unreasonable amount of time, the airline could be subject to enforcement action by the DOT.
  • Baggage Fees = Full refund when flight Is canceled or baggage declared missing.
