On of the most densely populated rail corridors in the United States is seeing some much needed improvements. The Northeast Corridor (NEC) stretch of track starts in Massachusetts’s and spans to Virginia. Over $130 million has been allocated towards rail improvements with $124 million set aside for this summer alone. Aging infrastructure will see replacements including 40 track switches and 25 miles of updated track. Train schedules have been modified to account for the upgrades while avoiding conflict with commuter trains that operate on the NEC.
Modernizing Amtrak
Amtrak is replacing much of their aging fleet and infrastructure. Most of the allocated funds will come from Amtrak grants, state contributions and Amtrak revenue. Not only will tracks see improvements, but so will stations and trains. New Acela trainsets are currently being tested along the Northeast Corridor. Sate supported routes will see brand new American made Airo Trainsets from Siemens. These improvements will help Amtrak offer competitive alternatives to flying or driving.
